dental crowns

A dental crown is like a helmet that fits over a damaged tooth, restoring its shape, size, and strength. It’s often used when a tooth is cracked, worn down, or after a root canal. Think of it as a little makeover for your tooth—giving it a fresh, strong start!

Dental Crowns

FIRST APPOINTMENT

At your first crown appointment in our South Austin office, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable – we numb the area, and if you’re feeling a bit nervous, we offer nitrous too. We get it!

The dentist will start by conservatively preparing your tooth to make space for the crown. Then, we’ll take a digital impression (no goop here!) or 3D scan to capture the exact shape of your tooth. This helps our lab create a crown that fits perfectly and looks just like your natural tooth.

Lastly, we’ll fit you with a temporary crown, which will stay in place for about two weeks while your custom crown is made.

SECOND APPOINTMENT

At your second appointment, we’ll remove the temporary crown and try on your final one. We’ll make sure it fits perfectly, looks great, and feels natural. We’ll even take an X-ray to double-check that everything is aligned just right. Our goal is for you to leave with a tooth that’s strong, functional, and something you can feel great about!

A dental crown may be needed for various reasons, including:

  • Tooth Decay: If a tooth is severely decayed and cannot be restored with a regular filling, a dental crown will provide the necessary protection and support to preserve the tooth’s structure.
  • Cracked or Broken Tooth: A dental crown can hold together and protect a tooth that has a significant crack or fracture, preventing further damage and potential tooth loss.
  • Large Filling: When a tooth has a large filling that compromises its integrity, a dental crown can strengthen and reinforce the tooth, reducing the risk of fracture.
  • Root Canal Treatment: After a root canal procedure, the tooth can become brittle. A dental crown is often placed on top of the treated tooth to add strength and protection.
  • Misshapen or Discolored Teeth: Dental crowns can be used for cosmetic purposes to improve the appearance of misshapen or severely discolored teeth, enhancing the overall aesthetics of your smile.
  • Tooth Wear: Teeth that have worn down significantly over time due to grinding or erosion can benefit from dental crowns to restore their original shape and function.
  • Dental Bridges: Dental crowns are used as supportive anchors for dental bridges, which replace missing teeth by bridging the gap between adjacent teeth
