Plaque and calculus buildup prevents the whitening gel from reaching the tooth.
ZOOM! Whitening 101
The stains you see on your teeth are actually in the tooth enamel. The natural color of your teeth is brought back through the process of whitening with a gel containing hydrogen peroxide. First your eyes, lips and gums are covered for protection; then the gel is applied to your teeth. A special UV light activates the whitening power of the gel.
Your ZOOM! whitening procedure consists of three fifteen minute sessions. Each time, a new layer of whitening gel is applied to the teeth. The procedure is safe and effective and we take precautions to make sure you are comfortable throughout the process.
Teeth Whitening Results
A comparison between the beginning and final shades of tooth color will be made. This will indicate the extent of the whitening process. Everyone has their own unique optimum tooth color. This is the base line shade with no staining at all. Your optimum tooth color will be reached with the final shade in the whitening process. Staining from years of eating and drinking dark colored foods and beverages will be eliminated.
After the first fifteen minute session you will notice marked improvement in the color of your teeth. You will be able to compare the difference between the shades before treatment and after to gauge the effectiveness of the whitening process.
ZOOM! & Crowns, Veneers, Bonding
Keep in mind that fillings, crowns, and veneers are man-made restorations and will not be affected by the whitening process in the same way as your natural teeth. Many such restorations are slightly lighter in color than the natural teeth to begin with. Unless the shade of these restorations was picked when your teeth were at their optimum color, they may look a little different from your fully whitened teeth; however, you have the option to monitor the whitening process after each session. You can choose when to stop the process.
White Spots on Teeth
There are a variety of reasons why white spots may occur on a person’s teeth. It could be a matter of genetics, early childhood illness, spots left after orthodontic treatment, or some other cause. There is a possibility that the removal of stains may cause these spots to become more prominent, but within a few days they tend to even out more with the natural tooth color.
Don’t Ruin That New Bright Smile!
After your ZOOM! whitening treatment, your teeth will be more susceptible to staining for about two days. During this time the tooth enamel pores are open so eating and drinking dark colored foods and beverages is not recommended. You will be given a list of foods and beverages to avoid. If it will stain your shirt, it will stain your teeth.
Sensitivity from Teeth Whitening
It is not uncommon for patients to have some sensitivity while getting their teeth whitened. We want you to be comfortable during the process, however you may feel some peculiar sensations. One or two moments of sensitivity are to be expected, however more than that and you should let us know and we will halt the treatment. You will be closely monitored and given a bell to ring if you should experience any sensitivity.
While the vast majority of our patients complete the entire treatment, not everyone finishes all three of the fifteen minute sessions. Two sessions of the ZOOM! whitening procedure generally gives good results, but this treatment does not suit everyone. For your comfort, we want to end the treatment before teeth become more sensitive. This is why it’s important for you to let us know if you feel any discomfort during the process.
