Tips for Little Teeth
If you’ve got a little one who isn’t a fan of the dentist, you probably know you’re not alone. But teaching kids the importance of healthy teeth and gums now is one of the best ways to ensure healthy smiles for a lifetime.
Here are some kid-friendly tips for promoting clean teeth in between visits to the dentist:
- Invest in the coolest, neatest, most fun-looking toothbrush you can find. Little ones are much more likely to enjoy brushing their teeth when they get to do so with a brush that has their favorite character, superhero, color, or design on it that they were able to pick out.
- Tell a good story. Explain in a kid-friendly way why they should take care of their teeth, using imagery they understand. Tell a story about sugar monsters that want to hurt our teeth – anything that engages their imagination will make them more likely to jump on board.
- Create incentives that make oral care more fun. Whether it’s a fun chart with stickers, a goodie box, or getting to stay up a few minutes later at bedtime, incentivizing oral care makes little ones more likely to stick with it and less likely to fuss.
- Be a good role model. We’ve all heard our parents utter the famous line, “do as I say, not as I do.” This shouldn’t be the case when it comes to caring for your teeth. Show your kids the importance of healthy teeth and gums, and model that behavior each day. Let them brush their teeth alongside you, or make up a fun teeth-brushing song together.
